One feature of Windows NT/2000's (Win2K) C2-compliance is that it
implements object reuse protection. This means that when an application
allocates file space or virtual memory it is unable to view data that
was previously stored in the resources Windows NT/2K allocates for it.
Windows NT zero-fills memory and zeroes the sectors on disk where a file
is placed before it presents either type of resource to an application.
However, object reuse does not dictate that the space that a file
occupies before it is deleted be zeroed. This is because Windows NT/2K
is designed with the assumption that the operating system controls
access to system resources. However, when the operating system is not
active it is possible to use raw disk editors and recovery tools to view
and recover data that the operating system has deallocated. Even when
you encrypt files with Win2K's Encrypting File System (EFS), a file's
original unencrypted file data is left on the disk after a new encrypted
version of the file is created.

The only way to ensure that
deleted files, as well as files that you encrypt with EFS, are safe from
recovery is to use a secure delete application. Secure delete
applications overwrite a deleted file's on-disk data using techiques
that are shown to make disk data unrecoverable, even using recovery
technology that can read patterns in magnetic media that reveal weakly
deleted files. SDelete (Secure Delete) is such an application. You can use SDelete
both to securely delete existing files, as well as to securely erase
any file data that exists in the unallocated portions of a disk
(including files that you have already deleted or encrypted). SDelete
implements the Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard
DOD 5220.22-M, to give you confidence that once deleted with SDelete, your file data is gone forever. Note that SDelete securely deletes file data, but not file names located in free disk space.

The New Generation E-Compass

Electronic compasses are gaining popularity in hand held and mobile devices primarily driven by the need to orient maps.  Electronic compass, generally referred to as e-compass, has the unique ability to orient the map with the viewing direction thus greatly enhancing the user experience. E-compass also allows the mobile device to use any application that requires a geographical directional reference to be useful such as dead-reckoning (DR) navigation and location base services (LBS), two of the most promising applications coming to mobile devices.

E-compasses work by detecting the geo-magnetic components of the location and transforming them to the magnetic north direction. Honeywell offers high accuracy yet low cost magnetic sensor solutions for consumer electronics, mobile devices and netbooks. Our extensive experience in fabricating AMR sensors allows us to develop all-in-one 3-axis magnetic sensor components that are not only smaller in size, lower in power consumption and easier to implement, but also lower in per unit cost. They are specifically designed and priced for today’s fast growing consumer and mobile device market.

Similar to a traditional Honeywell AMR magnetic sensor designs, these new generation magnetic sensors maintain the same quality sensor elements and principle of operation to achieve high sensitivity, high resolution measurements of weak magnetic fields such as the earth’s magnetic field. These new sensors are built in with all supporting electronic circuitry (including set/reset demagnetizing circuit to maintain a superior performance advantage, built-in self test function that saves time and cost in manufacturing, variable gain amplifier to accommodate non-ideal magnetic environment, and a 12-bit ADC, etc.) and provide ready-to-use digital outputs all in one small package. The result is a high quality single-chip solution that can be integrated easily and cost effectively into any system even if the available PCB space is limited.

In tilt-compensated compassing applications commonly implemented in mobile devices, the three-axis magnetic sensor must be complemented by a tilt sensor to measure the gravitational direction. Working side-by-side with a 3-axis magnetic sensor, the tilt sensor provides measurements of pitch and roll angles to complete the 3D compassing solution. Besides the 3-axis magnetic sensor products, Honeywell also provides a compass-in-a-chip solution that combines 3-axis magnetic sensor, 3-axis MEMS accelerometer (as a tilt sensor), supporting ASIC, and a microprocessor with built-in compassing algorithm as an alternative single-chip tilt-compensated compassing solution for mobile devices.

In addition to the best-in-class magnetic sensors, Honeywell also offers engineering support and a complete software library to assist customers with the integration of e-compass applications into their mobile devices.
